Introduction

Martin O'Donnell, Professor of Translational Medicine at NUI Galway

Our symposium, entitled ‘An Update on Thrombosis and Stroke Risk during the COVID-19 Pandemic’, will target a series of inter-related topics.

We are pleased to have Prof Niamh O’Connell, Consultant Haematologist, St James’ Hospital, present a cutting-edge update on the effect of COVID-19 on coagulation and thrombosis, with a review of implications for venous and arterial thromboembolism.

Trish Galvin, ANP in Acute Stroke (University Hospital Galway), will review whether COVID-19 is associated with stroke risk, taking a direct and indirect perspective on the implications of the pandemic on stroke risk and consequence.

Dr Niamh Hannon, Consultant Stroke Geriatrician (University Hospital Galway) will then present an overview of antithrombotic therapy and COVID-19 infection, including current and future perspectives.

Dr Robert Murphy, SpR in Geriatric medicine, will tackle the challenge of monitoring for atrial fibrillation in the current healthcare setting, with emphasis on remote monitoring and virtual clinic follow-up.

This symposium, including a diverse panel of experts, promising to be an engaging and clinically relevant educational session for clinicians and healthcare professionals at all stages of training and experience.
