IGS Submission to COVID-19 Nursing Homes Expert Panel

On 17th June 2020, the Irish Gerontological Society attended an engagement with the Dept. Health's Nursing Homes Expert Panel.  The core theme of the session was Gerontology and Geriatrics in the context of COVID-19 and Nursing Homes.

The IGS was represented by:

Deirdre Lang, IGS Executive Committee Member.  Director of Nursing/National Lead Older Persons Services, Clinical & Integrated Programmes Office Nursing & Midwifery Services Director

and

Dr Diarmuid O'Shea, IGS President. Consultant Geriatrician, St. Vincent's University Hospital

There will be a great opportunity for the Expert Panel to distil the information they receive from this consultative process into findings and recommendations.  These will have the potential to influence, in a positive and constructive manner, improvements in how care and support are delivered to the ageing population across the continuum of care in Ireland.

We would like to thank those members who sent us their recommendations.  With the short deadline given for submissions, we included as many of your suggestions as we could.

Some feedback was not received in time to include it but this issue is something as a society we will continue to work on.   If you are interested in being part of a small working group on this, please let us know.

A summary of the IGS submission is available below.
